Stuff I mention a lot.
What I do
- Art-o-mat – I’ve sold a few hundred tiny pieces of art through this.
- The Book Academy – I’m a graduate. Luvvie Ajayi Jones is wonderful.
- bouncingleaf.com – My art site
- Prison Book Program – I volunteer there once or twice a month. If you have books meeting their criteria, you can give them to me to donate!
Books
Books I’ve read and highly recommend. The bookshop.org links are affiliate links. Support independent bookstores!
Tech books
- Accelerate: Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organizations by Dr. Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble, and Gene Kim.
- The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford. A fictional account of a DevOps transformation.
- Observability Engineering by Charity Majors, Liz Fong-Jones, and George Miranda. THE book to read about observability.
- The Staff Engineer’s Path by Tanya Reilly. What’s beyond Senior Developer?
- You Look Like a Thing and I Love You by Janelle Shane. Super accessible. I recommend this to anyone curious about machine learning and AI, regardless of their existing knowledge on the topic.
Leadership and other books
- Brené Brown – not sure you can go wrong with any of her books.
- Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin
- Good to Great by Jim Collins. The most engaging audiobook narrator I’ve ever heard.
- Professional Troublemaker (or really any book) by Luvvie Ajayi Jones.
- Start With Why by Simon Sinek. I was skeptical, Sinek seems trendy. But by the time I’d read the first few chapters, I was a fan.
- Turn the Ship Around! by L. David Marquet. Why bottom-up leadership beats top-down, even on a nuclear submarine.
- Wrong Fit, Right Fit by Dr. André Martin. It’s not always about good vs. bad company culture.
